4x1 – Episode 1

When Maude shows up late for a awards dinner for Walter, he forces her to choose between her run for a position on the New York State Senate or him.

4x2 – Episode 2

When Maude becomes overwhelmed with grief about Walter moving out into his new apartment, she changes her mind about breaking up and wants to get back together until she gets an eyeful of his new swinging singles apartment.

When Walter shows up at a party with a much younger escort, Maude gets angry and they argue which causes Walter to fall off the wagon and start drinking again.

When Maude decides to pull herself out of the election to help Walter with his alcoholism, he discovers he is being selfish and decides he wants her to continue her run for office.

It is finally election day, and Maude is happy that her marriage is back on track and that her and Walter have reconciled. However, she's nervous that she may not win the election, especially when she appears on a television talk show and voices her liberal views toward premarital sex. Suddenly Maude realizes she may lose the election.

When Vivian and Arthur go out of town on a vacation, Vivian leaves her dog, Chuck in Maude's care. However, when Chuck unexpectedly passes away, Maude must break the news to Vivian but fears Vivian will blame her for Chuck's death.

When Maude finds a piece of paper that Mrs. Naugatuck dropped with an address on it, she becomes determined to discover what Mrs. Naugatuck is up to.

While having dinner at a restaurant with Maude, Vivian sees her ex-husband who has been enjoying the swinging single life.

While accompanying Arthur on a trip to Pittsburgh to attend a medical convention, Walter poses as a doctor as a joke at the conference, but he is called for a real emergency when a handyman begins to have a heart attack in the hotel room.

Vivian returns from a relaxing retreat; Arthur invests in flashlight slippers.

When Randolph Cutler is on the verge of a major business deal with Walter's store, Walter uses his secretary to make sure he agrees to the deal.

Maude receives a letter from her ex-husband Albert, who believes he's on death's doorstep, and he arrives on Maude's doorstep with a final request of her. Meanwhile, Founders Day has Walter advertising in the local newspaper and gearing up for a big sale.

With Christmas on the way, Walter has his annual office Christmas party at the house. But he's worried that Maude's feminist friend, Stephanie, who goes out of her way to preach to everyone on women's rights, will put a damper on the festivities. Maude must step in and find the middle ground between standing up for women and free spirited frivolity of some of the party-goers.

Maude is excited for Walter's birthday, and has planned a surprise party for him. The party is interrupted by two police officers who arrest Walter for indecent exposure earlier that day. When Walter's alibi proves nearly as embarrassing than the accusation, it's up to Maude to get the charges dropped, while simultaneously convincing the editor of the Tuckahoe Tribune to cancel their front-page story on Walter's arrest.

Maude becomes obsessed with getting Henry Fonda elected president. Shocked by her behavior, Walter and Carol question her mental stability and later learn that she is manic depressive.

Maude stages a tribute to American women for the Tuckahoe Bicentennial celebration and all the men are convinced it is a money losing proposition. After seeing some of the practice performances, the man who owns the studio pulls out. However, it seems that all the men were wrong, and soon the show is sold out.

4x20 – Episode 20

Mrs. Naugatuck has been studying to take the exam to become a United States citizen. However, the day before the examination, she begins to forget even the simplest facts about United States history, and is quickly diagnosed as having suffered a minor stroke. Now hospitalized, her chances of becoming a citizen are in jeopardy.

4x21 – Episode 21

Maude's nephew visits and everything about him annoys Walter.

Maude is ecstatic when she discovers that Vivian is having a literary authority over for lunch. Maude had previously met him at a cocktail party and is dying to spend time with him. However, she is stunned and unable to come to terms with the fact that he cannot stand her.
