Kritik

„Eine gesunde Seele wohnt in einem gesunden Geist und in einem gesunden Körper.“

„Soul Eater“ dürfte wohl auch den meisten Nicht-Animefans zumindest dem Namen nach bekannt sein. Die Mangaserie erschien zehn Jahre lang von 2003 bis 2013, 2008 begann die Ausstrahlung der 51-teiligen Animeserie. Seit 2011 existiert auch eine Spin-Off-Serie „Soul Eater Not!“, die ebenfalls bereits eine Animeadaption erhielt. Und der Erfolg des Franchises ist mehr als gerechtfertigt.

Die Welt von Soul Eater könnte schräger nicht sein. In der Stadt Death City existieren neben den Menschen noch andere Gruppen von Wesen, sogenannte Shinigami (Todesgötter), Hexen und Dämonen. Ebenfalls gibt es die Besonderheit, dass manche ihre Form zwischen einer menschlichen und der einer Waffe wechseln können. Im Zentrum der Stadt steht die Shibusen, eine Schule, in der Jugendliche im Gebrauch der Waffen ausgebildet werden und so zu Waffenmeistern werden. Das Ziel aller Waffenmeister ist es, 99 sogenannte Kishin-Eier und die Seele einer Hexe zu sammeln und damit ihre Waffe zu einer Death Scythe heraufzustufen.

Die Erzählung konzentriert sich auf drei Waffenmeister und ihre jeweiligen Waffen. Hauptprotagonisten sind Maka Alban und ihre Waffe Soul Evans, auch bekannt als Soul Eater. Neben diesen beiden spielen noch Black Star mit seiner Waffe Tsubaki Nakatsukasa und Death the Kid mit seinen beiden Waffen Patricia und Elisabeth Thompson eine wichtige Rolle. Außerdem tritt der Direktor der Shibusen, der Totengott Shinigami und gleichzeitig Vater von Death the Kid des Öfteren auf. Und ohne diese Palette an einzigartigen Charakteren wäre „Soul Eater“ nicht einmal halb so lustig. Da wären beispielsweise die Rivalität zwischen Soul Evans und Black Star oder das zwanghafte Verlangen von Death the Kid alles (wirklich alles) symmetrisch zu halten, weswegen er auch zwei identische Waffen benutzt, die in ihrer menschlichen Form Schwestern sind. Geradezu ironisch sind da seine überhaupt nicht symmetrischen Haare.

Weiterhin parodieren einige Charaktere gekonnt bekannte Filmfiguren, so die Paarung aus Franken Stein, der als Lehrer an der Shibusen arbeitet und einen anderen Lehrer namens Sid Barett nach dessen Tod als Zombie wiederbelebte. Außerdem taucht mehrmals während der Geschichte die Waffe Excalibur auf. Dabei handelt es sich um ein merkwürdiges, kleines, weißes Wesen, das wohl zu Recht als nervigste Figur aller Zeiten bekannt ist (im positiven Sinne – kann nervig überhaupt positiv sein? Naja egal...). Sein Erscheinen ist an das eines britischen Gentlemans angelehnt, auch wenn sein Körper eine Mischung aus Mensch, Hase und Sichel darstellt. Excalibur soll die stärkste Waffe überhaupt sein, aber der Waffenmeister muss jeden Tag 1000 teils absurd lächerliche Regeln befolgen und nebenbei noch den ganzen Tag mit der kleinen Nervensäge aushalten (zu seinen Lieblingsbeschäftigungen zählen das Rezitieren seiner eigenen Legende und andere als Narren zu bezeichnen).

Neben den zahlreichen verrückten Gestalten schlägt die Serie auch häufig ernstere Töne an, denn die bunte Welt ist längst nicht so fröhlich wie sie scheint. Die Charaktere haben mit dem Psychoterror ihrer Feinde zu kämpfen, die Beziehungen zwischen Waffe und Meister sind bei den Protagonisten sehr feinfühlig ausgearbeitet und die Shibusen bewahrt ein düsteres Geheimnis.

Mindestens genauso einzigartig wie die Figuren ist der Zeichenstil, der übrigens gelungen von der Mangavorlage umgesetzt wurde. Beginnend bei den schrägen Gebäuden bis hoch zu Sonne und Mond gestaltet sich die Welt von Soul Eater unverwechselbar. Innerhalb der Animeszene genießen gerade die finster lachende Sonne und der hinterhältig grinsende Mond Kultstatus, die auch eigentlich gar nicht mit Worten beschrieben werden können, man muss diese seltsamen Objekte einfach gesehen haben.

Die deutsche Synchronfassung kommt selbstverständlich nicht an das japanische Original heran. Aber das kann man ja auch nicht erwarten. Zumindest ist die deutsche Fassung erträglich und eine annehmbare Alternative für solche, die zu faul sind Untertitel zu lesen sind.

Fazit

„Soul Eater“ gehört vollkommen zu Recht zu den bekanntesten und beliebtesten Animeserien. Kaum ein Franchise bietet eine derart unverwechselbare Welt und haufenweise verrückter und liebenswerter Charaktere. Einfach ein unvergessliches Serienabenteuer, das man sich nicht entgehen lassen sollte.
