In the small Flemish town Vredegem (Dutch for 'Peaceville'), the brothers Thomas and Matthias Dewitt risk having to close down their inherited insurance agency, which ails since their father's death. Having to pay out the life insurance of Jean-Claude Delcorps would surely sink them, so they are determined to investigate his strange death. The widow and especially her four sisters, who all hated their brother in law, all seem to be sanctimonious and full of secrets.

Thomas and Matthias Dewitt continue their investigation, focusing on Jean-Claude's exploded chalet. Indeed, the Goethals sisters remember how Eva took charge of an attempt to eliminate Jean-Claude, merely because of his inappropriate behavior during a company quiz. The sisters however failed to kill him, as only the chalet perished in their arson attempt.

Thomas and Matthias Dewitt continue their investigation by paying a visit to another sister, nurse Veerle. She also had a motive since Jean-Claude discovered she was cheating on her husband, paramedic Wout. Veerle however refused to participate in the next murder plan plan, poisoning, but eagerly advises against mushrooms, coming up with a non-suspicious hospital drug. Yet they once again fail to kill Jean-Claude, when the dog eats what no other human house-mate ever touches.

Thomas and Matthias Dewitt question the youngest sister Rebekka, who realizes only now she has been dating the enemy. Rebekka joined the conspiracy after Jean-Claude forbade his wife to grant her a private loan. Their following murder attempt, electrocution in bath, also went wrong, with even an innocent neighbor getting killed off. However the Goethals sisters do not longer seem the only enemies of Jean-Claude. He was bullying a lot of people, like the gay scout leader Roger, whom he made the police believe to be a pedophile.

Thomas and Matthias Dewitt question the one-eyed Birgit Goethals. She remembers how Jean-Claude's hatred for his daughter's kitten got the animal killed. The sisters decided to replace the peaceful annual family outing by a paint-ball initiation. Birgit practiced to become deadly accurate with frozen ammunition. However, in the rush of the game, she hit the wrong person.

Thomas Dewitt finally obtains the autopsy, which strengthens his murder suspicion. Brother Mathias however almost prefers to believe in an accident, for his lover's sake. A few months earlier, Jean-Claude Delcorps succeeded in eliminating Eva as rival for a promotion and made another attempt to inform nurse Wouter Cox of his wife's adultery. The sisters planned another murder attempt, using a rape drug to stage a hanging, but the garage rod he's suspended on bent and triggered the door opening mechanism, so neighbor Valère Bols saved his life.

The brothers believe they have found an important trail, since they can prove the Goethals sisters had hired a private investigator. They do not deny this. But in fact, the story went way further then that. Besides the detective, the sisters also hired an assassin. Unfortunately, the wires got crossed, leading to another dramatic showdown.

The brothers have collected most pieces of the puzzle, yet Matthias convinces Thomas there is still more left to discover. Like how months earlier, Jean-Claude played a dirty trick on a Chinese restaurant, making him being targeted by a mob leader. The gay Frederik Lint got the promotion Jean-Claude hoped for, but resigned after he failed to sexually approach his boss Gerard Wijnants. And also, the sisters discovered Jean-Claude helped his mother Hermin to hide her husband's corpse, in order to keep receiving his pension.

Rebekka learns she has failed to kill Jean-Claude. The story is even more dramatic: Hermine and her little dog died instead. Few days later, Rebekka witnesses Jean-Claude craftily getting rid of his parent's corpses. Meanwhile the sisters find out that Jean-Claude got Eva fired. Her psychiatric problems were due to the fact that a few years ago, she was raped by him and got pregnant. The sisters decide to poison him after the celebration of Goedele's 40th birthday. Meanwhile, Roger discovers that Jean-Claude was the person that made him become a suspected pedophile.

After Jean-Claude's sudden death, the sisters suspect each other of having acted solo. When fresh widow Goedele learns about the past murder attempts of her sisters, she reacts stunned. By reconsidering the whole case and discovering everything about Jean-Claude's pranks, the sisters find out that themselves were not the only possible murderers. While Thomas Dewitt's wife gives birth, brother Matthias finally puts the puzzle together. However none of the sisters wants to end up in jail, and so Rebekka gets the task to get rid of him.
